Bathroom Renovation in Montreal, Done Once and Done Properly

Full Remodels, Walk-In Showers and Custom Vanities Across the Island

A bathroom is the smallest room in the house and the one most likely to cause
expensive damage when something is done badly. Water finds every gap. A shower
pan that was not waterproofed correctly will not show a problem for two years,
and by then the subfloor underneath has already gone.

We handle bathroom renovations across Montreal from demolition through to the
final seal, including plumbing, electrical, waterproofing, tiling, vanities and
ventilation. One crew runs the whole job, so nobody is waiting on a
subcontractor who did not turn up.

Most of our work is in older island housing, which means small footprints,
original cast iron tubs, and plumbing that was installed before anyone thought
about where a second sink might go. We look at all of that during the site visit
so it lands in the quote rather than appearing once the walls are open.

What Usually Goes Wrong in an Older Bathroom

Most bathroom renovations we quote are not about looks. They start because something failed. Grout that has been resealed three times and still goes dark within a month. A floor that feels soft in one corner near the toilet. Paint lifting off the ceiling above the shower because the extractor fan vents into the attic instead of outside. These are symptoms of water getting somewhere it should not, and surface fixes do not stop them. The repair that actually works means taking the wet area back to the studs, checking what the water has already reached, and rebuilding with a proper membrane behind the tile. It costs more than retiling over the old surface. It also lasts twenty years instead of eighteen months. Space is the other common driver. Bathrooms in older island homes were designed when a single small vanity and a tub was the standard. Moving a wall is often impossible, but swapping a tub for a curbless shower, changing the door swing, or wall-mounting the vanity can make a tight room genuinely usable without touching the structure.

Bathroom Renovation in Côte-Saint-Luc

Côte-Saint-Luc housing is mostly post-war, and that shapes almost every bathroom job we do there. The detached bungalows and split-levels built through the 1950s and 1960s came with one main bathroom and sometimes a half bath, both small, both built with cast iron tubs and original ceramic tile set directly onto mortar. That construction has one advantage and one problem. The advantage is that it was built solidly and much of it is still sound. The problem is that there is no waterproofing membrane behind any of it, because the technique did not exist yet. Once a grout line fails, water goes straight into the wall cavity and nobody knows for years. Removing original tile set in mortar is heavier work than stripping modern tile off drywall. It takes longer, generates far more debris, and occasionally reveals that the studs behind have already taken damage. We price that possibility into the quote rather than discovering it on day two and asking for more money. Accessibility comes up more often in Côte-Saint-Luc than in most areas we work. A lot of residents have been in the same home for decades and want to stay there. The bathroom is usually the first room that stops working for them. Converting a tub to a curbless shower, widening a doorway, setting a bench at the right height, and fitting grab bars into blocking rather than into drywall anchors makes a real difference, and most of it can be done without the room looking clinical. For the apartment and condo buildings along Cavendish, Kildare and Mackle, the constraint is usually the building. Management sets work hours, requires elevator booking for material and debris, and wants an insurance certificate on file. We arrange that before the crew arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Montreal?

Cost depends on the size of the room, how much plumbing moves, and material
choice. Replacing fixtures and retiling within the existing layout sits at the
lower end. A full gut with relocated plumbing, a custom shower and new
ventilation sits considerably higher. We give a fixed written quote after the
site visit, broken down by trade.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

Most full bathroom renovations run two to four weeks on site. Custom glass and
vanity lead times are usually the longest wait and can add several weeks before
work starts. We give you a dated schedule before demolition and update you the
same day if anything shifts.

How much does it cost to convert a bathtub to a walk-in shower?

Cost depends mainly on how much the plumbing has to move and what type of shower goes in. Swapping a tub for a standard shower base in the same footprint sits at the lower end, because the drain stays close to where it already is. A curbless shower costs more, since the floor has to be recessed so the drain sits below the surrounding level, and in some builds that means cutting into the subfloor or building up the rest of the room. Frameless glass, custom
tiling and a built-in bench each add to the total. The quote we provide after
the site visit breaks those elements out separately so the cost of each choice
is clear before anything is ordered.

Is a permit required for a bathroom renovation in Quebec?

Cosmetic work generally does not need one. Replacing a vanity, retiling in the
same layout or swapping fixtures in their existing positions falls outside
permit requirements in most cases. Moving plumbing, altering electrical
circuits, removing a wall or changing the room’s footprint usually does need
approval. Permit rules are handled locally rather than provincially, so the
process differs by municipality. Montreal boroughs each run their own, and
separate cities on the island such as Côte-Saint-Luc, Westmount and Hampstead have their own permit offices with their own requirements and timelines. We confirm which approvals a project needs at the quote stage and submit the application where required.
